Okay, let me just start by saying vlogs just might be my favorite types of videos. Not only to watch, but to film and edit, too! And this one is preeeeeeeetty special to me. On Sunday, Daniel and I slept through the church alarms and just had a lazy morning. I've been really busy with work this entire past week so one day of sleeping in, even on a Sunday, seemed necessary. We had such a fun, laid back day. This day in particular was super exciting because it marks one year that we have had Marble in our lives! We snagged a little dog treat from the pet shop and I made her a little hat from things around the house. We are so cheesy. But it was so dang cute. We vlogged all the fun things in our day. We started by taking Marble to a patio (where a bee attacked us) and the lake to grabbing lunch and antique shopping. In this video I also show you a mini-haul of all the goodies I got at Flea Style over the weekend, too! My favorite item probably has to be my stamped "Marble" cuff bracelet from All the Wire. I walked around for like 4 hours trying to decide what I wanted my bracelet to say (they hand stamped this on site!) and I finally just settled on Marble. I thought about something with "Lee" and "Leigh" but seeing as I already have a tattoo, it seemed a little redundant, ha!
I ended the vlog chatting about my diet and how I have changed it over the past two weeks. For the last few years, there really hasn't been anything that I have followed consistently in my diet - especially after I got married - and I wanted to change that. I began feeling really crummy about the way my body looked and how I felt. I wasn't sleeping well and I was ultimately fueling my body with crap. I was drinking some form of alcohol almost every night before bed and ordering whatever I wanted from restaurants. There were hardly any good foods being put into my body and I just didn't care. A few weeks ago, I began listening to health and nutrition podcasts on my way to work and found a familiar name that I had seen before: Joy McCarthy. I had heard of her from another youtuber and remembered how much she talked about enjoying the book she wrote, Joyous Health. After searching high and low in Dallas for her book with no luck, I ordered it (and her detox book!) though amazon. Immediately, I began eating whole, nutritious foods that she talked so much about. I started watching all her youtube videos and tried to read all her informative blog posts. At this point, I haven't necessarily stuck to "one form" of any kind of diet by the way - when I say "diet" I'm referring to the food and beverages I am consuming. So I changed my diet to follow the super informative book she wrote describing all kinds of amazing foods and their awesome benefits to a healthy, happy body. And just two weeks later, I am feeling great! I sleep like a baby, I am never "hungry" and I feel like I physically look better. I don't weigh myself and I don't want to, ha! But I do feel like my face has slimmed down, I'm not constantly bloated from crappy foods and I just feel good. So far I am very excited about this new health journey and I hope that I can keep learning, growing and bettering myself with this new way of fueling my body with good, whole foods and nutrients. I encourage you guys to give her website or youtube channel a look if you're feeling a little lost in your diet or where to even begin. She makes is really easy and is very encouraging about healing your body with whole ingredients!
I'd love to do another full blog post in the future about my healthy eating journey and how it is affecting me. Let me know if that is something that interests you! I love researching those kinds of things so it's defiantly a passion of mine. If you're looking to get started today after reading this post and watching my youtube video, I do have a few easy, important key things that I have noticed help me eat nutritious meals everyday. Keep in mind I am not a health guru and have so much to learn but these tips are what I've taken from Joyous Health that are easy to add to my everyday routine and I've noticed huge benefits! Check them out below!
Eating more green vegetables has been super easy for me to implement into my daily food intake. It's so easy to pop a bunch of raw kale into my morning smoothie. I use one frozen banana, one cup of almond milk, one tablespoon of hemp seeds, one table spoon of chia seeds and fill with water to the top and viola! Can't even taste the nutrient dense kale.
I thought to myself "there is no way just drinking warm lemon water in the morning can really make that big of a difference". But it CAN and it DOES! I go back and forth between drinking half a lemon with warm water and adding a teaspoon of powdered turmeric into this morning drink. The lemon is surprisingly stimulating and wakes me up pretty nicely. It's also really great for firing up the digestive system and getting things moving, ha! Adding turmeric gives this tart drink a warmness to it that I really like. Be careful if you use turmeric though! It's extremely pigmented and will dye your countertops, glasses and fingers if you aren't careful. I know it's best to use raw turmeric when possible but since this was new for me, I wanted an easy organic powder to add to this morning drink. *
Small tip, when you are finished squeezing your lemon, throw it in your garbage disposal and give it a wiz! The lemon cleans the disposal and leaves your sink smelling lemony fresh.
This has been the best tip I have taken from the Joyous Health book. When you implement a good source of protein and fat into each of your meals, you get the longevity of the good protein and fat that burns slowly in your body. This keeps you fuller longer! This tip has kept cravings, intense hunger and energy levels so much more even and balanced. I love getting protein from hemp seeds, nuts and nut butters. The nuts are also a good source of fat! I just make sure not to over indulge in these and eat them with an apple usually. The toast above was a quick breakfast idea since I didn't have a prepped smoothie and this specific morning I had a couple extra minutes. I used sprouted Ezekiel bread (sprouted grains are easier for your body to digest!) with almond butter (I like the fresh ground kind at whole foods or central market), one banana, hemp seeds and chia seeds.
I hope you enjoyed the video
I'm Alyssa, thanks for stopping by! A few things: I enjoy laughing, making youtube videos and thrift shopping. Currently listening to "Last Night" by The Strokes. I like my coffee black and my preferred method of maxin' & relaxin' is with my husband and pup.
