How to Start Eating Healthy
THREE EASY TIPS:
Hello! Today’s video is going to be talking about how to start eating healthy. If you’re like me, I didn’t have a lot of knowledge about nutrition and fueling your body with healthy foods. About 4 weeks ago I found myself at a breaking point. I was bloated, puffy, sluggish, unhappy and didn’t like the way I looked. Along with that, I was eating whatever I wanted and however much I wanted and didn’t even care what it was doing to my body. I’ve always been interested in health and nutrition but never found anything that really stuck with me. After getting married in 2014, I was eating all the yummy foods and drinking all the wine. I thought that was what would make me happy but in the end, it made me gain weight, sleep horribly, have anxiety, not fit into my clothes and generally felt unhappy. That’s when I delved straight into “The Ultimate Health Podcast” as a quest to inspire myself into learning more about nutrition and a healthy diet. The first podcast I listened to was an interview with Joy McCarthy of Joyous Health. She’s a holistic nutritionist in Canada and I had heard of her before from another YouTuber, Ashley from MakeupTIA. In the podcast she raved about how wonderful you can feel when you just fuel your body with nutritious, detoxing, yummy foods. Four weeks later, and a lot of learning to do, I can say that changing my diet to eating nutritious foods has been a LIFE CHANGING experience. I feel full, satisfied, energetic, calm, less anxious and happy. I’ve tried so many crash dieting that left me super hangry and I can promise you, if you eat the right foods in every meal, you just might never experience that feeling again! Here are my easy tips for starting to eat healthy. Please note, I am not a nutritionist or doctor and you should consult with your nutritionist or doctor before changing your diet. These are just simple tips that anyone can incorporate into their daily life who are seeking a healthy life.
DRINK MORE WATER
I know what you are thinking… “This is so silly, Alyssa, everyone tells me this! NEXT.” But hear me out. Yes, you should be consuming more water because it’s SO GOOD FOR YOU. Our body is made up of 55-60% WATER. Do you know why your head feels so horrible after a hangover? That’s because your BRAIN is made up of 73% water and when you go out drinking dehydrating alcohol, your brain is literally quenched and desperate for the goodness of water. LOL, been there too many times to count. Also, if you are consuming more water, you won’t have time to consume sugary drinks or caffeinated drinks. Replace these drinks (try at least one or two a day!) with a big glass of water. I’ve been starting my morning with a warm cup of water with as much lemon as I want (or have on hand!). I love adding fresh ginger, turmeric and cayenne too. I know that may be too much for people or sound gross (it’s not, I promise!) but it’s super warm, fires up my belly and makes me feel invigorated in the morning. Not to mention they are all super detoxing and nourishing ingredients.
EAT A HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN AND FAT IN EVERY MEAL
This means breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Let me tell you, I used to get SO HANGRY and irritable in between meals. This led me to crave all the bad things…chips and salsa, greasy foods, literally anything I could get my hands on. This has to be the biggest and best tip I have taken from Joy McCarthy of Joyous Health. Once I was eating a good source of protein and fat in each meal, I was fuller longer, my mood stayed balanced, I wasn’t hungry too early and I felt happy and satisfied. My favorite sources for high quality protein are hemp seeds (they have all 9 amino acids, too!), quinoa, almonds, chicken and lean beef. My favorite fats are chia seeds, nuts, seeds, high quality oils and avocado. I make sure to have a combination of the two in each of my meals so I feel full, happy and satisfied longer. EAT MORE GREENS
This is such an easy one. The greener the leaf, the better it is for you. Don’t go and make yourself a salad with only iceberg lettuce because it’s mostly water! You’ll feel hydrated but this source of leafy greens isn’t the best in nutritional scale and you may not feel fuller longer. If that stuff is your jam, go for it! Just make sure to add some spinach, arugula or kale to make it more nutritional. If you aren’t a huge fan of kale or spinach, try adding them to a smoothie. My favorite morning smoothie combo is one cup of almond milk, one frozen banana, a BUNCH of kale, hemp seeds, chia seeds and water (sometimes I add fresh pressed peanut or almond butter, too!). This tip has been a huge and easy change for me. Everyday I just make sure to consume more greens than my other foods and I end up feeling full and satisfied! I dress up my salads with tons of yummy, whole ingredients and I am good to go. Make sure you are choosing healthy ingredients to pair with your greens. I stick to raw veggies (or lightly cooked in coconut oil), a healthy fat and protein, and a clean dressing. If you are looking for a healthy crunch, try pumpkin seeds, toasted walnuts or slivered almonds! My favorite quick clean dressing is lemon juice and Dijon mustard. It is so simple to make your favorite dressing at home so don’t be afraid of this! Daniel will make me a large batch of clean dressing and I’ll eat it all week.
