Hi friends! Gonna be honest, I am obsessed with how this easy DIY turned out. Anyone can do it! No, seriously. All you’ll need are two items: a permanent fabric marker and a 3’ x 3’ piece of light colored fabric. I bought both items at the fabric store with a coupon so it was very inexpensive! It would be really easy to find something around your home or in your closet and upcycle it with this DIY as well. The options are endless!
This mud cloth DIY is multipurpose and can be used and styled so many ways. Throw it over a chair, hang it on your kitchen stove, wrap it up tight as a modern + minimal scarf, upcycle a pillow case, make it wall art, use it as a Christmas tree skirt, a table runner, OH! or use it as wrapping paper for a gift... alright, now I'm getting carried away. But hello! I mean?!?
As you’ll see in the video I came up with new patters for each line as I went. I kept the patterns simple because let's be honest, I'm no artist and DEFINITELY don't have the patience for perfection (most of the time *wink). Next, I mirrored it on the opposite side of the fabric. It's pretty fool proof - you can even come up with whatever design you want! Mine was inspired by traditional African mud cloths but definitely not as beautiful, ha! Click here to read up on how traditional African mud cloths are made and what their symbols, fabrics, etc. mean.
I hope you love this DIY! I've added the full pattern down below and you can save this to your desktop or your smart phone to DIY it yourself, however, don’t forget you can make this however YOU want to! I’d love to see if you guys create something similar so tag me on Instagram @alyssaleighcates if you do!
Just about my entire life I have been a part of worship in some capacity at the churches I've attended. Growing up, I would lead at my home church, which my parents still go to. Over thanksgiving break I told my mom that I was scheduled to sing "What a Beautiful Name" by Hillsong at my church here in Dallas and she fervently asked us to record it so she could see. She means the world to me so we did, and here it is to share with you. I hope that this song meets you where you are, religious or not, and that you feel a sense of peace and love over you. I had to pray and refocus myself before singing this because I was so caught up in the possibility of messing up, my voice cracking, missing words or facing people's judgement. That is not at all what worship is about! I set my heart on Him and prayed that He would use me through this song and I continue to pray that here. Thank you for watching or listening. I did this for my mom but I hope if someone else out there is meant to see this as well that they'd feel love, peace and strength.
"You have no rival, You have no equal
Now and forever, Our God reigns
Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name, above all names
What a powerful Name it is, The Name of Jesus Christ"
I hope everyone had a really amazing thanksgiving! Daniel, Marble and I are in my hometown celebrating with my side of the family for the holiday. Since we've been married, we switch off holidays with each family so we'll be in Mount Pleasant with the Cates' for Christmas. I love that we see both families during the holiday season! I'm super grateful to love my in-laws just as much as I love my family. They raised a pretty cool dude, if ya know what I mean.
I thought briefly about putting a little Black Friday or Cyber Monday round up on the blog but in all honesty, the shopping I'd rather do on both of those days would still be thrift shopping. My sisters and I just might hit up our favorite one in Conroe (hint: it's the Angelic Resale Store)! In fact, the dress in that picture above is from Goodwill and was only $6! I've worn it twice and already have had so many compliments. YAS. Anyways, if any of you bbs are braving the craziness of Black Friday then #bless and do you boo. I hope you find what you're looking for!
I've been vlogging a bit of this thanksgiving break so I'll edit and post it soon! Let me know what videos you like to watch the most. I love making them all but definitely want to hear what you guys love to see!
Have you ever found a blog/person/company on social media and immediately get hooked? That totally happened to me when I saw this gal. I stumbled upon her feed coincidentally (probably looking through hashtags on instagram!) and immediately feel in love with her feed - and adorable pup! I think the first photo I saw (and ~tbh~ the reason I started following) was a picture of her new blue merle pomeranian pupper. I immediately showed Daniel because our lil' home girl is also an adopted blue merle pomeranian (and we are obsessed with her, duh).
She and her hubs live in the most beautiful, re-done, Nashville abode and makes life there look like perfection. Crisp white walls, big windows, gorgeous vintage pieces that fill the house...her kitchen is insane and they are always crafting up a delicious cocktail, homemade meal and enjoying the slow life with their fur babes. Definitely want a yard now, ha! *sends daniel zillow listings...
Speaking of Nashville, ever since my favorite YouTuber picked up her entire life on a whim and moved from sunny, Southern California to Nashville, Tennessee, I've been enamored by the city! I'm dyingggggg to visit again. Daniel and I visited about 4 years ago and stayed with a few friends but haven't been back since. Something about Nashville seems magical and easy, slow but present and all around somewhere I wanna be. I'm hoping we can make a road trip to this pretty city in early 2018... #tbd on this. ANYWAYS, you should follow her and see the precious pics of her blue merle, Ida (that name, I MEAN?!) and her beautiful, stylish, vintage home.
If you've ever felt intimidated by thrifting, I gotta tell ya - the cure might be a thrift challenge. For me, walking blindly into a thrift store with no plan, no need, just fun...I can almost always find something special. It's just how my brain works - I like to treasure hunt for interesting pieces I can transform and wear in modern ways. However, if you've walked into a thrift shop and wandered aimlessly because you have no idea what to look for or how, try a thrift challenge. Challenge yourself to find something specific or copy a look you love. I promise you'll have a lot of fun and when you see that cashier ring up your low cost bill, you'll be doin' a happy dance.
You can check out the thrift challenge I did for my youtube channel and see how I took mismatched pieces from Goodwill and made a beautiful Thanksgiving table setting for only $7.
I met Rachel at a Flea Style show earlier this year and "oo-ed and ahh-ed" over her gorgeous handmade jewelry. She has the kindest spirit and is so dang sweet! That's why when I saw her at our fall Flea Style Dallas show back in October, I knew I couldn't miss out on purchasing something from her handmade collection. I opted for three 14K hammered stacking rings. I loved that I was able to try each size on in person and pick and choose where I wanted my rings to be placed on my hands. Also, this was immensely helpful because I have zero clue what size ring the majority of my fingers are, ha! I wear mine on my thumb, pointer finger and as a middi-ring on my middle finger. I love and wear them every day! Perfect go-to, daily rings. The quality is great so I know they will last me a long time. You should totally go check out her website! ALSO, if you are in the Houston area, she'll be at our Houston Flea Style (along with sooo many other amazing vendors) this Saturday on November 18th from 9am-5pm at Silver Street Studios. PS... that gorgeous picture of Oh Little Foxes rings on the right is from her website!
Ever since I snagged my v much needed fall candles, I've been lighting our candles like a mad woman. Bathroom? Check. Bedroom? Check. Kitchen? Check. Living Room? Obvi. This precious Smokin' Matchbox by RBTL© Paper is just about empty and I am so, so sad. Aside from being completely in love with the company (and the amazing woman/team who runs it!) they curate the most perfect selection of quirky and easy gifts for every person in your life. Their own line of paper goods is just too good. Melinda, the mastermind behind the company is lovely, unbelievably witty and as compassionate as they come. Why would you not want to support these pals?? I'm such a fan of these humans.
These matches have lasted me throughout this season and I am for sure going to rush and get more. This time I think I'll get the "Ooh, Burn" matchbox because #duh it's precious and hilarious.
It's hard to believe this is the first time I've ever attempted a "thrift challenge". Guess what? Yes, I am HOOKED! It was so much fun to go blindly into a thrift store (even though I do this every time I thrift shop because you never know what you are going to find!) with a goal and leave feeling accomplished. For this challenge I decided that I was going to try to do my best to find a few pieces to make my Thanksgiving table setting beautiful and unique.
After about 15 minutes in, I fa sho thought to myself “welp, I can’t find anything… I’ll have to figure out a different video concept for this Thanksgiving collab”. But ALAS, right on the cusp of frustration (there were literally only 3 shelves of “home” to choose from) I found a few little saucer plates about the same size. None of them matched and I loved the idea of a mismatched table setting. Next, I see a little something green in the corner of my eye and #YAS it was a super cute, festive little table wreath! Thinking to myself “did this just happen? is this actually going to work?!”, I turned a few more times down the aisles and found the 4 glasses to add to my basket and Daniel helped me spot two mismatched candlestick holders. Success? I think yes. DID I MENTION it was only $7.56 for all these little items? Praise.
We made a pit stop at the dollar tree for $1 candlesticks and cruised on home with my finds. Immediately, I started pulling out things from around my home I thought would work well with the items I purchased. There was an orange velvet curtain I hadn’t used in a while, a nice amount of our leftover couch reupholstry fabric (aka the dropcloth we used to DIY, rit dye and cover our vintage couch…read here if you’re curious!) that would be perfect as napkins at the table. With a few other knick-knacks and some pumpkins, the table came together beautifully! I couldn’t stop staring! I wanted to sit there and enjoy my Thanksgiving table in that moment. Yes, I was v proud. You can ask Daniel, I wouldn’t stop telling him how cute I thought it all was, ha!
Check out the video to see it all come together. I encourage you guys to try this yourself! It’s not as intimidating as it may seem and you can pull together the coolest tablescape with your personal touch. That’s what I love about thrifting – what you LOVE, someone might completely pass up. You can curate such an amazing space, home and wardrobe when you choose to thrift shop. Plus, treasure hunting budget friendly finds is a blast.
I'm Alyssa, thanks for stopping by! A few things: I enjoy laughing, making youtube videos and thrift shopping. Currently listening to "Everything Now" by Arcade Fire. I like my coffee black and my preferred method of maxin' & relaxin' is with my husband and pup.
