Last week Daniel and I went on a casual date night to drinks and a movie. Here is what I wore! I paired my trusty, Old Navy clearance romper with a thrifted denim vest, TJMaxx Steve Madden espadrilles, a thrifted purse and handmade jewelry. Our first stop was in front of this crazy western place right off Lamar Street. I've always wanted to stop and take pictures at this fun mural but have never had a reason! After some joking around and filming some outfit footage, we drove a few minutes down the street to The Cedars Social. I really love this spot! It has a really cool vibe and has great cocktails. There is a little library nook in the bar area that is a total 1960's throw back (I of course made a b-line for it). I'm not one for a super fancy, well made drink but this one hit the spot. I had a delicious, spicy jalepeno & green bell pepper drink but for the life of me, I can't remember what they called it! Super delicious. Daniel stuck to a bourbon neat. Without planning on it, we caved and got the kobe & pork meatballs and they were soooooo yum. With just enough time to catch our movie, we headed back down the street to Alamo Drafthouse and saw Guardian's of the Galaxy. It was great. V much recommend. V much recommend Alamo Drafthouse. It's the best.
Be sure to stick around for the bloopers. They are my FAVORITE part.
What's your go-to look for a quick bite or movie?
shop the look
I thought it would be fun to film a healthy grocery haul to share with you guys! I found so many interesting, healthy grocery snacks and odd items at my local health food store and wanted to share them with you. A few of these items are (or have become) rotating staples in my pantry. Since this was filmed two weeks ago, I can confirm that everything I bought was SUPER tasty and worth my pennies! Check out the video to see healthy cookies, crackers, roasted beans and my favorite drinks I have every day!
A few items from the video:
I literally don't even know where to begin. I have been the biggest fan of this girl for years. Nikki Phillippi has a YouTube channel focusing on lifestyle, music, & beauty. She has the cutest little family and biggest heart. I remember stumbling upon her YouTube channel in 2013 and immediately thinking "this girl could totally be my friend". She's a young, kind, Christian gal married to her best friend. She loves singing, fashion, being kind and giving beautiful advice/encouragement that this world needs. I found her at a time in my life where I was feeling down and lost and (even if it sounds cheese) I really felt like God brought her into my life for a reason. She's been a sounding board in my life and I feel like she always puts her best out there as her truest self and loves on others immensely. I'd love to meet her one day and give her the biggest hug. Everyone needs to give her channel and instagram a look and just soak in her encouragement and realness!
SWEETS: Chameleon, Simple Mills + RawMio Chocolate goodies
Guys. The chocolate cravings (and literally all bad foods) have been so real this week if you KNOW WHAT I MEAN *WINK WINK*. I got home from a 5 day work trip on Sunday and Daniel was picking me up from my boss lady's house. I texted him that I was desperate for the Simple Mills chocolate chip cookies from our pantry but he told me he'd already left the apartment. THE DISTRAUGHT. It's okay though, we rushed home and I scarfed down more than I am proud of (10). People, I need you to understand. These delicious little cookies taste JUST LIKE CHIPS AHOY but have only the best and cleanest ingredients. Even Daniel was super surprised! You've got to check them out! It's been soooo helpful having these sweet treats around the house when I get that hankering. I'm so glad this week is over though because I'm feelin' it! I've been a fan of the Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha flavor for several years and it's literally one of my absolute favorite things. I like to just add a splash to a huge cup of ice water if I want a little hint of flavor. I purchased the RawMio chocolate bar on a whim while I was out shopping Monday and crampin' like a mad woman. The bar was like $6 but let me just tell you - it was worth it.
Things: JustFab Sandal + Slip-on
These bad boys came in the mail on Wednesday and you could say I'm in love. I've wanted a slip on shoe similar to Brother Vellies for a while and several companies have their own versions of them. I have an authentic pair of babouche nude slip ons from First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas but haven't worn them yet because I feel like they need to be jazzed up a bit! These were a nice neutral option for a great price. I purchased both the sandal and slip on through their first timer VIP program - so the two were only $39. I probably won't keep my membership due to the fact I don't buy new shoes each month but I am glad I've tried out JustFab. The shoes are a pretty nice quality and the fit is great! The slip ons are a little short for my foot but I can totally still make them work. I wore the black sandal all day Thursday! Love the simple embroidery and lace up detail.
Music: HOlly Maher
I remember in 2013 sitting at my old job, at my old desk, reading Love Taza's blog and seeing this precious video. Yes, people, I did read a blog at that job. It was a pretty boring desk job and I got my work done early so often!! Anyway, I just loved the song they paired with this video and for some reason lately, I've had it on repeat. It's sweet & simple & lovely. Naomi is a precious NYC mom with the cutest family and style. You need to go check out her blog if you like this video!
How to Start Eating Healthy
THREE EASY TIPS:
Hello! Today’s video is going to be talking about how to start eating healthy. If you’re like me, I didn’t have a lot of knowledge about nutrition and fueling your body with healthy foods. About 4 weeks ago I found myself at a breaking point. I was bloated, puffy, sluggish, unhappy and didn’t like the way I looked. Along with that, I was eating whatever I wanted and however much I wanted and didn’t even care what it was doing to my body. I’ve always been interested in health and nutrition but never found anything that really stuck with me. After getting married in 2014, I was eating all the yummy foods and drinking all the wine. I thought that was what would make me happy but in the end, it made me gain weight, sleep horribly, have anxiety, not fit into my clothes and generally felt unhappy. That’s when I delved straight into “The Ultimate Health Podcast” as a quest to inspire myself into learning more about nutrition and a healthy diet. The first podcast I listened to was an interview with Joy McCarthy of Joyous Health. She’s a holistic nutritionist in Canada and I had heard of her before from another YouTuber, Ashley from MakeupTIA. In the podcast she raved about how wonderful you can feel when you just fuel your body with nutritious, detoxing, yummy foods. Four weeks later, and a lot of learning to do, I can say that changing my diet to eating nutritious foods has been a LIFE CHANGING experience. I feel full, satisfied, energetic, calm, less anxious and happy. I’ve tried so many crash dieting that left me super hangry and I can promise you, if you eat the right foods in every meal, you just might never experience that feeling again! Here are my easy tips for starting to eat healthy. Please note, I am not a nutritionist or doctor and you should consult with your nutritionist or doctor before changing your diet. These are just simple tips that anyone can incorporate into their daily life who are seeking a healthy life.
DRINK MORE WATER
I know what you are thinking… “This is so silly, Alyssa, everyone tells me this! NEXT.” But hear me out. Yes, you should be consuming more water because it’s SO GOOD FOR YOU. Our body is made up of 55-60% WATER. Do you know why your head feels so horrible after a hangover? That’s because your BRAIN is made up of 73% water and when you go out drinking dehydrating alcohol, your brain is literally quenched and desperate for the goodness of water. LOL, been there too many times to count. Also, if you are consuming more water, you won’t have time to consume sugary drinks or caffeinated drinks. Replace these drinks (try at least one or two a day!) with a big glass of water. I’ve been starting my morning with a warm cup of water with as much lemon as I want (or have on hand!). I love adding fresh ginger, turmeric and cayenne too. I know that may be too much for people or sound gross (it’s not, I promise!) but it’s super warm, fires up my belly and makes me feel invigorated in the morning. Not to mention they are all super detoxing and nourishing ingredients.
EAT A HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN AND FAT IN EVERY MEAL
This means breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Let me tell you, I used to get SO HANGRY and irritable in between meals. This led me to crave all the bad things…chips and salsa, greasy foods, literally anything I could get my hands on. This has to be the biggest and best tip I have taken from Joy McCarthy of Joyous Health. Once I was eating a good source of protein and fat in each meal, I was fuller longer, my mood stayed balanced, I wasn’t hungry too early and I felt happy and satisfied. My favorite sources for high quality protein are hemp seeds (they have all 9 amino acids, too!), quinoa, almonds, chicken and lean beef. My favorite fats are chia seeds, nuts, seeds, high quality oils and avocado. I make sure to have a combination of the two in each of my meals so I feel full, happy and satisfied longer. I would love to share a “what I eat in a day” with you so let me know if that is something you would like to see!
EAT MORE GREENS
This is such an easy one. The greener the leaf, the better it is for you. Don’t go and make yourself a salad with only iceberg lettuce because it’s mostly water! You’ll feel hydrated but this source of leafy greens isn’t the best in nutritional scale and you may not feel fuller longer. If that stuff is your jam, go for it! Just make sure to add some spinach, arugula or kale to make it more nutritional. If you aren’t a huge fan of kale or spinach, try adding them to a smoothie. My favorite morning smoothie combo is one cup of almond milk, one frozen banana, a BUNCH of kale, hemp seeds, chia seeds and water (sometimes I add fresh pressed peanut or almond butter, too!). This tip has been a huge and easy change for me. Everyday I just make sure to consume more greens than my other foods and I end up feeling full and satisfied! I dress up my salads with tons of yummy, whole ingredients and I am good to go. Make sure you are choosing healthy ingredients to pair with your greens. I stick to raw veggies (or lightly cooked in coconut oil), a healthy fat and protein, and a clean dressing. If you are looking for a healthy crunch, try pumpkin seeds, toasted walnuts or slivered almonds! My favorite quick clean dressing is lemon juice and Dijon mustard. It is so simple to make your favorite dressing at home so don’t be afraid of this! Daniel will make me a large batch of clean dressing and I’ll eat it all week.
I'm Alyssa, thanks for stopping by! A few things: I enjoy laughing, making youtube videos and thrift shopping. Currently listening to "Last Night" by The Strokes. I like my coffee black and my preferred method of maxin' & relaxin' is with my husband and pup.
